Returner Screen Printing Open Access

FRIDAY 20 JULY 2018

An open access screen printing session at Slamseys for past students to make use of our screens and workshop space. This is a slightly more informal session, where students are encouraged to work on their own projects and explore screen printing ideas, drawing on their experience from past screen printing workshops.

Students are free to use the session however they would like, but within the three hours you will have time to cut a two-colour design and print it onto paper (please enquire about printing onto fabric as you will need to bring along your own material). You may choose to come with stencils already prepared, for more time to print or you may need a little guidance and reminders of how to get started.

You will leave with… paper prints of your one, two or three colour design.

Who is this workshop for?
Those who have been on a screen printing course before and who have the confidence to create a strong screen print design. Ruth will lead the session and give pointers, guidance and offer a spare hand or two to support you in developing and printing your design. This workshop is not suited to those with no screen printing experience.

Materials and Equipment
All printmaking tools, materials and equipment will be provided (please note that if you would like to print onto fabric, you need to bring your own). Please bring along a sketchbook and basic drawing materials. You also need to have prepared some ideas for your screen print, such as print-outs from the computer, magazine cuttings or your own sketches. For inspiration, please look at our Screen Printing boards on Pinterest,

Important Details
Group size is limited to 4 people to give you plenty of space to work in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. There will be opportunities for questions and advice throughout the session. The session will begin at 09:30, so please arrive five minutes beforehand for a cup of tea or coffee. The workshop will finish at approximately 12:30, but please note that times may vary depending on the speed at which you work and the complexity of your design. You may not want to stay for all of the session if you have a very simple design – please feel free to use this printmaking session as you need to.

My interest in art has taken me all around the world, working in the Australian outback, London’s Mayfair and now back home in Essex. I studied printmaking at the OCA, Gainsborough's House and Colchester Institute and really enjoy helping people discover how easy it is to create their own designs using simple printing processes.  I opened Slamseys Art so that everyone can have a go at learning new creative skills.

The 5 Week Printmaking Short Course was a perfect introduction to a variety of ways of printing art, that could easily be replicated at home. Ruth is a very talented artist who is able to generate an enthusiasm for what she does during the course. She is very patient and allows each member of the class to 'do their own thing'. The surroundings in which the course takes place are ideal and the equipment provided is very good. I will certainly continue to print art at home and have already begun collecting a few things with a project in mind. I thoroughly enjoyed each morning.

The Fabric Printing One-to-One course was fantastic. We were so impressed with the course from booking to finish. Ruth was flexible and accommodating when we needed to change our booking at the last minute. We would just love to do more printing now! The follow up information about where to purchase supplies etc. is extremely helpful. This will ensure we carry on!

I found the Fabric Printing Short Course really interesting and informative, especially as this is something I've never tried before, it was very good value for money. I especially liked the small class and the laid back approach Ruth has, it really does makes people feel at ease and able to express themselves individually. Also being able to experiment with different techniques and mediums. The cakes were a real treat too!
