Summer School, Introduction to Printmaking
Join us at Slamseys for a week of fun introductory printmaking workshops.
On Monday we use our etching press to print drypoint plates, experimenting with mark-making and chine-collee.
On Tuesday we move on to look at linocut; using soft-cut plates you will make a ‘suicide’ plate to explore multi-colour prints and registration, printing using our bookbinder’s relief press.
On Wednesday we will be making monoprints, using a gelatine plate with natural and found stencils and textures. You will create your own stencils to add additional layers and complete your compositions.
On Thursday we use simple screen printing techniques to print your designs, before moving on to try thermofax and experiment with adding textures and over-printing your previous designs.
On Friday you will have the opportunity to revisit and develop any of the previous days’ techniques. You might choose to explore a new theme during this time or to combine techniques to make a final composition.
You will leave with … multiple prints on paper using each technique, plus a lino and drypoint plate that you can continue to make prints with after the class. Upon completion of the course there will be an in depth manual emailed out to you containing instructions, details of materials and equipment.
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is aimed at those with an interest in printmaking, who may have a little or no previous experience. This course is ideal for those who want to explore and develop new creative techniques. Due to the small group size, help and advice is always at hand meaning that your learning is fully supported throughout the course.
All printmaking equipment and materials will be provided and so you don’t need to bring anything with you. However, we recommend that you bring along your sketchbook or any special reference material that you would like to work from. We will have plenty to inspire you here, so don’t worry if you don’t have anything particular in mind. For inspiration, have a look at our printmaking boards on Pinterest.
Group size is limited to only 4 people to give you plenty of space to work in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The workshop will begin at 10:00, please arrive five minutes before the start of the first session for introductions and a cup of tea or coffee and slice of homemade cake. The workshop will finish at approximately 12:30, but note that times may vary depending on the speed at which you work.

My interest in art has taken me all around the world, working in the Australian outback, London’s Mayfair and now back home in Essex. I studied printmaking at the OCA, Gainsborough's House and Colchester Institute and really enjoy helping people discover how easy it is to create their own designs using simple printing processes. I opened Slamseys Art so that everyone can have a go at learning new creative skills.

"We really had a fantastic time learning how to screen print and creating our own designs and would love to do more with Slamseys.... Highly recommend both in terms of the fab venue and teaching!!"
"Many thanks for an most enjoyable workshop today. It has opened up many more creative and exciting possibilities for me to use in my work."
The 5 Week Printmaking Short Course was a perfect introduction to a variety of ways of printing art, that could easily be replicated at home. Ruth is a very talented artist who is able to generate an enthusiasm for what she does during the course. She is very patient and allows each member of the class to 'do their own thing'. The surroundings in which the course takes place are ideal and the equipment provided is very good. I will certainly continue to print art at home and have already begun collecting a few things with a project in mind. I thoroughly enjoyed each morning.
The Fabric Printing One-to-One course was fantastic. We were so impressed with the course from booking to finish. Ruth was flexible and accommodating when we needed to change our booking at the last minute. We would just love to do more printing now! The follow up information about where to purchase supplies etc. is extremely helpful. This will ensure we carry on!
I found the Fabric Printing Short Course really interesting and informative, especially as this is something I've never tried before, it was very good value for money. I especially liked the small class and the laid back approach Ruth has, it really does makes people feel at ease and able to express themselves individually. Also being able to experiment with different techniques and mediums. The cakes were a real treat too!
